Previously on What We Teach Our Children:
We’ve been exploring the importance of creating community – contributing to something greater, feeling a sense of belonging, and building healthier cities through regenerative architecture.
Why is that so important? As a species our very survival depends on us coming together cohesively to face our future. Part of our disconnect from each other and the Earth has occurred through urbanisation and commoditisation of our food production.
Scientists have identified 9 Earth system thresholds – planetary boundaries that are crucial for maintaining a stable and resilient environment.
1. Climate change. 2. Biodiversity loss. 3. Bio-geochemical flows. 4. Land system change. 5. Freshwater use. 6. Ocean acidification. 7. Stratospheric ozone depletion.
8. Atmospheric aerosol loading. 9. Chemical pollution.
Many of which are already collapsing according to current modelling.
Our symbiotic relationship with this planet is intrinsic to the quality of life, for both humans and the earth. My guest today believes that regenerating landscapes, reconnecting people with their food and the land from which it grows, cultivates strong communities of change.
Jade Miles is an Author, Podcaster, Farmer of heritage fruits and CEO of Sustainable Table who’s invested in regenerating natural resources and connecting people to Earth systems through their food. Children have become a central focus of influence with the development of hands-on seasonal farm visits.
You can teach your children about growing food by introducing the topic through my book ‘Grandpa’s Garden’ and starting your own food garden, with herbs and vegies.
